Creating Instruction Manual

Think About.....

Use Table to Help Control:
A. Contrast
B. Repetition
C. Alignment
D. Proximity
- how things are connected together
This will help to determine what goes where i.e. steps, images etc.

While you do this think about your:
* Audience
* Constraints
* Exigence: Purpose or Need
* Sinequanon(Something you can't do without) of Rhetoric
* Create Salience; What stands out? Essential Tool
* How do you grab the attention of your reader in order to emphasize what you want to convey?
Note: Refer to Bitzer and Vatz

What's Included in Conventional Instruction Manual:
1. Purpose
2. Parts/Materials
3. Steps
-Identify using numerical number
-Start each step with ACTION verb
Go beyond convention of normal instruction
Think of different ways to display

Anderson says: I'm providing conventional structures for you but you need to adapt them to your own situation and audience.

Use data gathered from Usability Tests
Sample Size: 3 People
* Set Objectives and tabulate conclusions
* After each step, indicate how each user responded
* Take notes, including user statements
- Your user's statements are your data...No data = No results
- Categorize statements
* Data gives you arguments for redesign of manual

Create a Table of the Culmination of Your Test Results:
First Column: Unit of Analysis
Second Column: Descriptive Categories
Third Column: Results

All these aspects will contribute to final redesigned instruction manual!
Good luck!
