You may have already heard of this, but I figured that I'd post this announcement on the blog since the student who's leading this initiative is in one of my courses.
-------------------------
The Georgia Tech Pride Alliance and the Writing and Communication Program have joined the community, corporate, and collegiate movement across the country by co-producing a Georgia Tech It Gets Better video. It Gets Better is a national movement to reduce bullying and suicides among LGBTQ youth.
We would like to officially invite you to the premiere of the video, which will be on October 10 @ 7:00pm in the GA Tech Student Center Ballroom. The premiere, which is free and open to the public, will have several parts:
- the first public screening of the video;
- a 45-minute talk-back with the video’s producers and several featured participants, who will offer a behind-the-scenes discussion of the videomaking process, discuss their experiences with coming out, and invite comments and questions from the audience;
- a Storytellers-style live performance by Matt Morris, a nationally-recognized musician and songwriter, who has worked with artists such as Sarah McLachlan, Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson, the Indigo Girls, Ingrid Michaelson, and Charlie Sexton. He has generously donated the use of one of his songs for the video and will perform an acoustic set and speak about coming out, community, social media, and songwriting.
Here is a link to the Facebook page for the event: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=176200282456787. While the video itself is an important step toward opening a conversation about LGBTQ inclusivity, we think it's even more important for us all to assemble as a group at the event to show our support for the diverse Atlanta and GA Tech community, so please add your name to the Facebook event, forward the invite to anyone who might be interested, and tweet about the event using #GATechItGetsBetter.
While the event is free, you can help support the project by donating to the GA Tech Pride Alliance by clicking on the following link: http://pride.gatech.edu/About/donate.php. Thanks in advance for your support, and we hope to see you on October 10.
Best,
